The Reliable and Courageous Sheprador
By: ladywordsmith
The new mixed breed animals are all the rage for people who want some thing different. You may be wondering what a Sheprador is because it is one of these interesting hybrids. This is a cross between an Australian Shepard and a Labrador Retriever.
In order to understand the ways in which this dog is different, it is a good idea to know something about the two breeds. When you think about the Australian Shepherd you have to understand that it is a dog that was originally bred to herd a variety of animals on ranches. The Labrador was taught to retrieve everything from small animals to small fishing boats.
When you put the two together you may have a dog that both herds and retrieves so you may have to stimulate both of these urges in order to make your dog happy. Another thing to know is that they have similar but different temperaments. As an example, the Labrador is very gentle and patient while the Australian Shepherd is courageous and loves to play.
Both of these are fun loving dogs and are good with families. So, you will put the breeds together and have a dog that will protect the family and still enjoy herding them and retrieving things; both of these traits are important to know because they will be used for how to exercise them.
The size of your Sheprador is going to vary and it can be anywhere from 20 to 24 inches tall and weigh from 40-75 pounds. Most will probably fit somewhere in the middle and males tend to be bigger than females. This may be something to take into consideration if you want them to be good in your home.
Both dogs need to be exercised and need a yard and they do better with a yard then cooped up in an apartment. Some of the exercises you can do with them is to take them dog walking with other dogs so they can be part of a pack, play games in the yard with them and play retrieving games. They may even benefit from swimming once in awhile since both breeds like the water.
What you might find interesting about the Shep part of the breed is that they are not from Australia. This is a totally American name they were given because they were created in America. It is not known whether their name goes back to an earlier type of dog they may have been bred from. Your Sheprador can be a very fun animal and they are great companions.

Last summer i rescued what I was told is an Aussie/chocolate lab mix. He is an incredibly affectionate and loyal dog. He looks like a shaggy chocolate lab with the yellow eyes of an Aussie. He's very protective though and I'm working on training him to be less so.
I have 2 Aussie/Chocolate lab mixes. My male is very laid back, and loveable. My female is a puppy and acts like one although I do have to say does not chew on anything (other than her things). Both are very protective and WONDERFUL members of the family.
We rescued a Sheprador from our local Humane Society...we know he's 1/2 and 1/2 because he came from a breeder that bred both Aussies and Labs. Oops!
Our dog Fenris is very sweet, smart, and loves to play. He is only 9 months old and is already doing wonderful off leash. He learned all of his commands (with hand signals) very quickly. He loves going for walks, loves the water and loves to snuggle on the couch.
All of our extended family think he is the best dog they have ever met--did I say how sweet he is?
He loves to play fetch, and herds our cats (ha ha!) And he does get along great with our cats, too. He also loves other dogs--so much so that we got another dog just for him so they can play.
Fenris is wonderful with children. He met my 2 year old niece on Christmas, and was very gentle with her. He never jumped up on her (which is amazing for a 4 month old puppy!)
Fenris does bark when someone knocks at the door (which we like)!
I don't know why all dog lovers don't have a Sheprador. I'm completely in love with him!
Does anyone have pictures they can email me? i am really interested.
Lilly and Blue, a bonded brother-sister pair came to my local animal shelter 3 years ago. They are definitely an Aussie-Lab cross: affectionate, smart, agile, loyal and so willing to please. Both are merled with white chests, and Lilly has the classic blue-brown eye. Good-sized dogs at 73 and 75 lbs. They are high energy and keep me fit. I've had other dogs in my life before, but these are "my"' first dogs. When that time comes, if I can steal my heart to have dogs again, I will look for this cross.
This summer I got a sheprador puppy when she was 7 weeks old. She was extremely difficult to housebreak. However, we did achieve the task. She loves to sleep and play. She will fetch anything you can throw. We are currently training her to be a dock dog. She LOVES to swim. She is very loyal and loving. At 6 months old she will do many tricks and is very obedient. We take her shopping with us and she stays right by my side in the stores. She loves other dogs and anyone who will pet her. This is a great hybrid breed.

So, what do you get when you mix an Irish Water Spaniel with an English springer spaniel? You get an Irish Springer, a dog fresh and clean as a whistle! This little joke illustrates the fact that crossing breeds can sometimes have some unexpected outcomes; some can even be comical, like the Puggle (Pug + Beagle), while others are very desirable. For example, the Irish setter, as we know it today, is the result of mixing six different breeds over time. According to...

A very interesting hybrid that was in my family for many years was a coodle. A coodle was in actual fact a cross between a French Poodle and a Border Collie. The couple met on a farm where the poodle was a house dog, and the Border collie was a working dog. Border Collies are used extensively in sheep farming, and are exceptionally effective in rounding up flocks of sheep, working almost telepathically with the farmer.

The Boxer is one of the more popular breeds for families with kids; they are excellent with children and very loyal to their families and so they make excellent candidates for those in need of a “protector” or sorts. You may think a Beagle, and a Bulldog are two unlikely mixes; the Bulldog is best known for his “smug” expression, and aggressive tendencies. What most do not know is that the the aggressive tendencies of the breed are not applicable if bred correctly. Bulldogs are loving, loyal creatures that prefer to snooze in the living room surrounded by their pack members [aka you and your family!] then go outside. Beagles share many of the same qualities, and are loyal, kid friendly dogs but this breed has a little more...

Did you know the Rottweiler was once bred to be a herding dog? Many people today are frightened of the breed because of it's large size, and "tough" looks. There are two breeds that are known for their love of children; the Labrador, and the Boxer. These two breeds are known for their loyalty, and playful attitudes. The Labrador is a working breed, best known for retrieving and hunting and for their charming personalities, non aggressive tendencies, and ability to withstand ear tugging from children. The Boxer is more standoffish, preferring the company of his own family to that of strangers, who he is wary of. When you put these two breeds together you are creating...
