The Playful and Courageous Dorkie
By: ladywordsmith
In high school students will say that certain things are Dorky and we wonder whether or not this is where this particular name came from for this mixed breed. None the less, we want you to know that it the Dorkie is a cross between a Dachshund and a Yorkshire Terrier. This breeds a small dog that is the size of some of the toy designer dogs.
When looking at this cross breed, it is important to not that you have the best of both worlds in the dogs. As an example you have an even tempered dog that is very playful when you have a Dorkie. When you look at the two breeds, you will find out that the Dachshund is naturally an affectionate and lively dog and that it is fun loving. Some people say they like to clown.
You will also find that the Yorkshire Terrier is clever and affectionate. Because of this the mix can be a good one. Many breeders make sure that these dogs are a 50-50 mix. This means that they will take two purebred dogs from each side and breed them. This technically means that the Dorkie in this case would still be a purebred, although some people will not acknowledge this fact.
However, when you go to purchase or adopt Dorkie, you may find if you ask about parentage, that the breeders bred the dogs form further down the line. You will want to ask about this to make sure you are getting the best quality dog that is possible.
Dorkies are also very small so many people like them because they can be carried around easier. They only challenge with this is that people forget that they are dogs and try to dress them up like humans. Sometimes this can be difficult for the dog because they aren't sure what their role is anymore.
Another interesting thing about Dorkies is that they are good for children. They enjoy running around the house and playing. They like plenty of attention and they can make great lap dogs. You will find them in a variety of colors which are usually consistent with the colors of the two breeds.
Keep in mind that when you are looking for a dog that is different it may be expensive if you purchase it and the price is going to be different if you go to a breeder than if you adopt one from a shelter or rescue.
Some people get their Dorkies then get discouraged and take them to the pound because this dog requires more exercise than many. It is a very active dog and likes to take walks, play in a yard and generally be both mentally and physically stimulated.
This is a characteristic of both breeds -- they both do well with daily dog walking and with lots of play in a yard or an apartment. They can have a tendency to be very rambunctious around children when they are having fun.
There is a lot of controversy about designer dogs and many breeders have a variety of crosbreed dogs available that they charge high prices for -- what do you think? Do you think these mix dogs are worth it?

Whoever wrote this must be inexperienced because I do dress my dorkie up, not every day, but often. And she does not mind it at all nor does it interfere with her knowledge of what her role is.
Also, she doesn't need lots of exercise like stated. She loves to run outside at least once a day but otherwise she is constantly sitting on my lap and taking naps.
Overall, I'd reccomend dorkies to people, they are the best! Not only is she adorable but she has the cutest personality.
We recently got a dorkie and he is the most amazing compliment to our cocker spaniel we could ever have imagined. No matter the situation he is always happy and loves to cuddle up to us or the spaniel. He is very playful and makes some very odd noises when he is jealous and wants attention. On top of this he knows exactly how to react when our spaniel is in a grumpy mood and just rolls over and difuses situations instantly, i couldn't think of a better dog.
i love my dorkie even tho she still has a tendancy to potty in the floor on occasion. she looks more like the yorkie in her. she is quite hyper at times and others purely lazy! haha
I love my Dorkie!!! we got our dorkie 3 years ago and we have breed her to our reg. yorkie twice they make very good puppies...she is expecting now. we have sold all the puppies fromher other litters. cant wait to see this litter
I got a dorkie puppy 2 days ago, and she is absolutely gorgeous. She has the most gorgeous temperment and is absolutely hilarious when she is play fighting with me. Her only problem is house training, but she's 8 weeks old, and it is new to her, and after all, thats what having a puppy is all about!!!
Our dorkie is now one year old and is absolutely beautiful. When I saw her at the pet store she reminded me of my childhood golden retriever puppy. She was quietly playing while all the other puppies were barking. She is still a quiet dog, and loves to cuddle and sleep. On her walks, everyone stops and comments on how adorable she is, "she's like a walking stuffed animal!" I have her on a BARF diet because she went through phases of refusing to eat commercial dog food early on. She is extremely healthy with a very sweet temperament. Doesn't shed, doesn't smell and requires very little grooming. I highly recommend this mix. Ours is a beautiful golden color with wavy soft fur. It doesn't grow as long as a yorkie, but it's a little different from a dachs. House training was a challenge, first used pads in the house because of the cold winter, then transitioned to outside only. She never makes a mistake unless someone is not there to let her out. If I take her out for her daily walks, she rarely has to urinate otherwise, but as a precaution I put have her go outside just before going to bed. I'm trying to decide whether to spay her - it seems a waste of good genes, but she does get moody when in heat and mounting her stuffed friend only leaves her frustrated. My 3 children were between 8 and 13 when we got her and the whole family is very gentle with her which may have something to do with her sweet temperament. She does have a short attention span with games - tires easily of "fetch" and tug of war games. She cost a fortune at the pet store in Tokyo, but is worth every penny.

So, what do you get when you mix an Irish Water Spaniel with an English springer spaniel? You get an Irish Springer, a dog fresh and clean as a whistle! This little joke illustrates the fact that crossing breeds can sometimes have some unexpected outcomes; some can even be comical, like the Puggle (Pug + Beagle), while others are very desirable. For example, the Irish setter, as we know it today, is the result of mixing six different breeds over time. According to...

A very interesting hybrid that was in my family for many years was a coodle. A coodle was in actual fact a cross between a French Poodle and a Border Collie. The couple met on a farm where the poodle was a house dog, and the Border collie was a working dog. Border Collies are used extensively in sheep farming, and are exceptionally effective in rounding up flocks of sheep, working almost telepathically with the farmer.

You may think a Beagle, and a Bulldog are two unlikely mixes; the Bulldog is best known for his “smug” expression, and aggressive tendencies. What most do not know is that the the aggressive tendencies of the breed are not applicable if bred correctly. Bulldogs are loving, loyal creatures that prefer to snooze in the living room surrounded by their pack members [aka you and your family!] then go outside. Beagles share many of the same qualities, and are loyal, kid friendly dogs but this breed has a little more...
